One of the suggestions my first instructor gave me when I
started my program was to keep everything. She said the things that I achieve
through my program would be detrimental in showing a possible employer after
graduation my work. She also told me to keep in mind when I was doing projects
to consider whether this is something, I think I should include in my
Counseling portfolio to present during interviews.
The thing is I had not never really heard of a counseling
portfolio. I had actually never presented a portfolio during a previous
interview, so I was a tad confused. She explained that the Counselling
portfolio helps give credibility to my job performance as well as give visual
aids to the interviewer about my abilities. Well, I have to admit that makes
sense, and I can see how it could make a difference during an interview.
From this discussion forward, I saved a copy of everything I
did for every class I took. I also kept books I believe would be beneficial to
me so I can reference them if needed. Now I know I need a counseling portfolio,
but does this mean I still need an employment portfolio? I did a little
digging, went to the principal of the school I worked for and the conclusion I
came to is YES. Yes, I need both an employment portfolio and a counseling
portfolio. For now, we will focus on putting our counseling portfolio together
and then move to the employment portfolio. So for now we will focus on what is
needed to begin putting your portfolio together.
